Lori L. Engler
Dialect Coach
My Story
I grew up in a small town in southeastern Pennsylvania, where my parents encouraged my interests in theatre, music, and dance. We enjoyed attending shows as a family, and I remember being immediately drawn into the stories that came to life onstage through live performance. I've always been interested in languages, and one of my earliest memories was curling up with an audio recording of a phonics primer called "Papa's Pipe." I studied Latin and French in high school, and I lived in the international dormitory in college, where I made friends with students from around the world.

I was first exposed to accents as a middle-schooler, volunteering for my high school's production of Oliver!. I loved listening in on rehearsals, and I was amazed at how an actor could instantly "become" another person by changing their speech. Soon after, I started performing onstage, too, and I was always drawn to roles that required an accent or character voice. I taught myself phonetics, and I enjoyed learning accents from every book I could find.
I trained in improvisational acting and voice acting, and I continued to use my fascination with the spoken word to bring dozens of characters to life onstage. My proudest achievement as an actor was teaching myself Hebrew for the play Handle With Care, for which I received a Best Actress nomination from Broadway World Orlando. I started dialect coaching informally for productions where I was an actor, and I enjoyed helping my fellow actors by sharing my knowledge of accents. When I was invited to "officially" dialect coach a production of Titanic: the Musical, I was immediately hooked! I was able to contribute to the show as a creative team member and guide the actors in bringing their characters to life, using authentic voices that celebrated the rich lives and poignant sacrifices of the Titanic passengers and crew.
Since then, I've focused on building my skills and experience as a dialect coach, and I've recently completed the Teacher Certification course in Knight-Thompson Speechwork, the gold standard in training for dialect coaches and speech/accent teachers. As a coach, I am motivated by inspiring young actors and people who turn to community- and semi-professional theatres as places for camaraderie and self-expression.
